About Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Welfare Council Limited

Established in 1966, the Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Welfare Council limited is one of the three leading social welfare organizations in Hong Kong. With a special focus on Community Care administered through Service Integration and Total Quality Management approaches, the Council offers a comprehensive range of services to users of all age groups and strata in the society, from infants to senior citizens of over a hundred years old. The Council also fosters mutual support and the caring spirit among volunteer members of the community, including commercial organizations, groups and schools, individuals and volunteers, in projects and services that help to build up a caring society.

About Solar Tower

The Solar Tower is specially built for observing solar activities with an area of 1,500 square meters and height of 36 meters. There is a solar telescope with a diameter of 350mm, which is one of the very few professional telescopes opened to the public. With precision spectrometer, observation and record system, the data from the solar telescope can be captured and used for the purposes of education and research.

Solar Tower is a base for science education and research centre. It is also an exhibition centre and venue for training to the public. In addition to promoting solar and astronomic knowledge, Solar Tower is expected to be a public platform to experience and reflect the relationships between human, nature and universe, as well as better awareness of our environment.

Project details

Project objectives:

  1. To facilitates the participant to enjoy the Science x Nature Science X Design Thinking in the Solar Tower Camp
  2. To create Science x Design Thinking platform to experience new ideas and knowledge

Program tentative schedule:

  1. Science x Design Thinking workshop @ Sat or Sun
  2. Star gazing workshop @ Fri or Sat night
  3. Solar Makers @ Mon-Fri campsite

Students will be involved in:

  1. Explore and design Science x Design Thinking workshops
  2. Develop teaching kits & tools for workshops
  3. Teach & implement the workshops

Date

  • 22 October – 23 November, 2018
  • 5 days per week, weekends for special events if necessary.

Solar Tower (No.14 Tai Yuk Road, Ma Wan, New Territories, Hong Kong)

Eligibility

PGDE full-time students from all major subjects

Students with background knowledge in the following areas will be an advantage:

  • Astronomy & Science
  • Nature Science/Outdoor Education
  • Design Thinking & Creativity Art
